This lovely authentic antique chain choker necklace is made of vulcanite.  Vulcanite was created in the 1830's by the Goodyear company by combining tree rubber and sulfur and became popular with jewelry manufacturers due to its ability to imitate Jet, the a stylish, rare material at the time.  It resembles a hard plastic.  It should not be exposed to direct sunlight or hot water as that can damage the piece. Just clean gently with a cloth. While it was an "imitation" material at the time, it is becoming hard to find.

Black jewelry was highly desirable to conform with mourning traditions. Women wore black for up to 18 months after a loved ones death and toward the end of the 19th century mourning jewelry and dress reached new levels of popularity and ornateness.

Beautiful Victorian Gothic Style!

Dimensions: Chain measures 15 inches.
