Pietra Dura is a form of mosaic that was developed in Italy in the 16th Century. Cut polished stones are placed together so perfectly that no space can be detected. Reaching the height of popularity in Florence, Italy in the 19th Century. A popular souvenir for English tourists to take back from Italy on their Grant Tour, it is also referred to as "Florentine Mosaic" due to the city of origin for much of the pieces. This is an exceptionally fine example.
