Victorian Silver, Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl, Garnet and Seed Pearl Fly Brooch circa 1870
One of the most unusual symbols found in Victorian jewelry is the fly. Seen more often than you might expect in 19th Century jewelry it held several meanings, both spiritual and personal including perseverance and humility as well mortality and playful romantic symbolism of secret keeping.
This gorgeous example is a silver brooch set with two winged insects set with greyish green cat's chrysoberyl bodies, garnet eyes and seed pearl set wings. Dating to the late 19th century, circa 1870, it is an example of naturalist design that was popular during the era. A true masterpiece of antique jewelry design!
