This exceptional antique ring dates from the early Victorian period, circa 1850. Part of the tradition of sentimental mourning jewelry, it features finely braided brown hair carefully set within a gold band. This tradition of hairwork was extremely popular in the 19th century and could be used to commemorate a deceased love one or were exchanged within families or relationships as a memento of those far away. This example is especially stunning featuring a 9k gold shield set with a flower (possibly a forget-me-not) and flanked by two hearts it suggests it may have been a romantic token.
