These delightful late 19th century Victorian antique butterfly earrings are made of French jet. French jet, a form of black mirrored glass (similar to its cousin, Vauxhall glass) was one of many materials developed to mimic jet and satisfy the demand for black jewelry worn during mourning. Butterflies may seem an odd choice for mourning jewelry but in the language of Victorian symbolism butterflies represented the soul and also transformation making them an apt subject for remembrance.

Made circa 1880, they feature numerous French jet beads and pieces set on a backing with a shepherd's hook ear wire to the reverse. A fantastically unique piece of Victorian history!
