Sterling Silver 1938 "Fur and Feather" Animal Pendant Medal
A truly unique historical artifact for the animal lover! This heavy (15.5 grams) hallmarked sterling silver medal features images of a long-haired cat, two rabbits, a guinea pig and rat surrounding the phrase "FUR & FEATHER." This delightful menagerie dates from 1938 and are the representatives of "Fur and Feather" - a magazine founded in England in 1890 - "A Weekly Journal devoted to Rabbits, Cage Birds, Cats, Cavies, and Pet Stock, for Exhibition and Fancy" this weekly paper wrote about to ‘small pets,’ and still survives today as Britain's leading Rabbit magazine. Most likely intended as a prize for show animal it reads on the reverse "PRESENTED BY "FUR & FEATHER" TO" but was never engraved. Beautiful worn on a chain today as a pendant necklace!
