Georgian "Modern Druid" Ceramic Secret Society Ceremonial Pendant circa 1820
The mysterious antique early 19th century Georgian pendant features two beautiful sides of hand painted ceramic. One side reads "Lodge no 5 of Modern Druids" "Established at New Mills 1820" with a profile of a bearded figure in a hooded shroud and the reverse has an image of Lady Justice, blindfolded with her sword and scales. A relic of the neo-druid moving starting at the end of the 18th Century - The Lodge of Modern Druids most likely refers to Ancient Order of Druids- a Georgian secret society founded in 1781 in London. A secret political organization similar to the Freemasons.
The exceptional pendant would have been worn on a ceremonial chain and is a rare and fascinating piece of history. Set in a yellow gilt metal frame (most likely gold-plated or vermeil).
